Darkie - our favourite show at the Cape Town Fashion Week

Sunglasses. All the eye make-up you need, day or night.

An eager crowd clad with sunglasses, teased by the soulful sounds of one of Darkie’s inspirations, Ray Charles, was given the privilege of viewing the Spring/Summer ‘08/’09 collection at Virgin Mobile’s Cape Town Fashion Week on Friday 15th August 2008....

“There's where the cotton and the corn and taters grow, There's where the birds warble sweet in the spring time, There's where this old Darkie’s heart am long to go.” Ray Charles

Upbeat, funky, bright, solid colours, bold patterns, playful zips and witty text prints– an all-round soulful and wearable collection of denims, t-shirts, women’s shirts, dresses and jackets – all branded with the afro comb logo appealing to a youthful, stylish audience. Inspired by 11 different cultures and the power of incorporating recycled clothing, Darkie’s distinctive creative designs ignite the passion in our hearts for this incredible place we call home.

With both men and woman’s wear stirred by the same palette, accompanied by chunky jewellery and vintage accessories; the clothes were made to fit and fit to make you feel the sexy soul of innovative local design. Personal favourite items were the girl’s bright blue skinny jeans, mini dress with pockets and coat with leather belt. Blue is definitely the stimulant in this spring/summer’s bright colour addiction. More favourite items spotted included the sexy sleeveless low cut zip top and black hooded dress with bold pink print text. For the guys we really liked the light turquoise skinny baggies with oversized pockets, vintage bag and the teal zip shirt with button detail. But it was an all round uplifting show with bright colours, bold cuts and mischievous detail of each item infusing a bright new wave of energy into the audience who responded well to the collection and were left feeling proud to be South African.
